The Book of Acts teaches that our Power to Be a Witness comes from the Holy Spirit, not from our own strength. Before sending His disciples into the world, Jesus instructed them to wait until they were empowered by the Holy Spirit. The same Spirit who empowered the early Church still empowers believers today to boldly represent Jesus, build His Kingdom, and be His witnesses wherever they go.

Unpacking the Message
Pastor Tracy opened the Book of Acts by reminding us that it is more than a record of the early Church—it is the continuation of Jesus’ ministry through believers empowered by the Holy Spirit. Before sending His disciples to fulfill the Great Commission, Jesus instructed them to wait for the promised Holy Spirit. Just as Jesus ministered in complete dependence on the Holy Spirit, He calls every believer to rely on that same power today. The purpose of the Holy Spirit is not to promote ourselves but to reveal Jesus, strengthen His Church, and advance God’s Kingdom.
Acts 1:8 teaches that the Holy Spirit empowers us to be Christ’s witnesses. Being a witness is more than sharing our faith—it is living a life that reflects Jesus through love, forgiveness, humility, courage, and obedience. Pastor Tracy explained that God’s power enables us to faithfully represent Christ in our everyday lives, giving us the strength to accomplish what we could never do on our own. We are not called to live the Christian life through human effort but through daily dependence on the Holy Spirit.
The early Church also demonstrates that God’s power flows through a united body of believers. As the disciples devoted themselves to prayer, unity, and obedience, the Holy Spirit worked powerfully through ordinary people to transform lives and spread the Gospel. The same Spirit who empowered the Church in Acts lives in believers today. Rather than simply admiring the early Church, we are called to become that kind of Church—people who depend on the Holy Spirit, boldly live out our faith, and faithfully point others to Jesus.
Questions for Personal Reflection
- Am I relying more on my own abilities than on the Holy Spirit?
- Where have I been trying to accomplish God’s work through human effort?
- If someone watched my life, would they see evidence of God’s power working through me?
- What fears or comforts keep me from boldly being a witness for Jesus?
- How can I become more intentional about listening to the Holy Spirit each day?
Group Conversation
- Why do you think Jesus instructed His disciples to wait before beginning their ministry?
- What does it practically look like to depend on the Holy Spirit instead of ourselves?
- How does understanding the purpose of God’s power change the way we view spiritual gifts?
- Why are prayer and unity so important for a healthy church?
- What opportunities has God recently given you to be His witness?
Application
This week, begin each morning with a simple prayer:
“Holy Spirit, I cannot do today in my own strength. Fill me again today. Help my words, attitudes, decisions, and actions reveal Jesus.”
Then intentionally ask God for one opportunity each day to be His witness.
That opportunity may look like:
- Encouraging someone who feels discouraged.
- Praying with someone in need.
- Sharing your testimony.
- Inviting someone to church or your Grow Group.
- Demonstrating Christ through forgiveness, generosity, or kindness.
God isn’t looking for extraordinary people.
He’s looking for ordinary people who are fully dependent on His extraordinary power.
Group Prayer
Heavenly Father, Thank You for not calling us to live the Christian life in our own strength. Thank You for giving us the Holy Spirit to guide us, empower us, and help us become faithful witnesses for Jesus. Teach us to depend on You each day instead of relying on ourselves. Fill us with boldness, compassion, humility, and wisdom as we represent Christ in our homes, workplaces, neighborhoods, and communities. May our lives point people to Jesus, and may Your Church continue to expand through the power of Your Spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen. 🙏
