Shift Your Lens reminds us that the Holy Spirit doesn’t simply empower believers to endure life’s circumstances—He empowers them to see those circumstances differently. Through Acts 3–4, we discover that when we stop viewing life through the lenses of complacency, circumstances, selfishness, or self-righteousness and begin seeing through the power of the Holy Spirit, God can work through ordinary people to bring healing, boldness, and transformation that impacts everyone around them.

Unpacking the Message

Pastor Josi continued the Whatever It Takes series by showing that the baptism and filling of the Holy Spirit is meant to change far more than our spiritual experiences—it changes the way we see life. Jesus promised the Holy Spirit so believers would have power to be His witnesses, not simply to receive salvation but to represent Him victoriously on earth.

Using her personal testimony of losing her family’s dream home during the 2008 recession, Pastor Josi illustrated how easy it is to become consumed by circumstances instead of recognizing God’s hand at work. Looking back, she could clearly see God’s faithfulness, but in the middle of the hardship, everything appeared blurry because she was looking through the wrong lens. The Holy Spirit invites believers to seek God’s perspective in the middle of life’s challenges rather than waiting until hindsight reveals His plan.

Acts 3 demonstrates this shift through the healing of the lame man. While many people saw the same situation, each viewed it through a different lens:

  • The people who carried the lame man saw through the lens of complacency, repeating the same routine every day without expecting God to do something new.
  • The lame man saw through the lens of his circumstances, asking only for temporary provision while missing the greater miracle God wanted to provide.
  • The people passing by viewed life through the lens of selfishness, too distracted by their own lives to notice God’s opportunities around them.
  • The religious leaders looked through the lens of self-righteousness, rejecting God’s power because it didn’t fit their expectations.
  • Peter and John, however, saw through a supernatural power lens. Filled with the Holy Spirit, they recognized both the need and God’s ability to meet it through the authority of Jesus’ name.

The miracle did far more than heal one man—it opened the door for thousands to believe in Jesus. Peter made it clear that the healing came only through faith in Christ, demonstrating that God’s supernatural power points people to salvation, not to human ability.

Pastor Josi emphasized that God is not searching for extraordinary people but for available people. Peter and John were ordinary men whose boldness came from spending time with Jesus and being filled with the Holy Spirit. Others immediately recognized that they had been with Jesus because His presence was evident in their lives. Likewise, our testimony becomes one of the greatest witnesses to God’s power because transformed lives cannot be argued away.

Even after facing opposition and imprisonment, Peter and John refused to back down. Instead of praying for easier circumstances, they prayed for greater boldness. God answered by filling them again with the Holy Spirit, reminding us that unity, prayer, and dependence on God strengthen the Church’s witness and allow His power to move through ordinary believers. Miracles may open doors, but boldness changes cities.

Ultimately, Pastor Josi challenged everyone to examine which lens they are currently looking through. Whatever lens has shaped our perspective does not have to define our future. As we spend time with Jesus and trust the Holy Spirit’s power, He shifts our vision so we begin expecting God to work in every area of life rather than simply reacting to our circumstances.

Questions for Personal Reflection

  1. Which lens best describes how you’ve been viewing your current circumstances: complacency, circumstances, selfishness, self-righteousness, or God’s power?
  2. Is there an area of your life where you’ve been focusing more on the problem than on God’s ability to work?
  3. How has spending time with Jesus changed the way you think, respond, or see difficult situations?
  4. What testimony of God’s faithfulness can you share that may encourage someone else’s faith?
  5. How can you become more aware of opportunities to be a witness for Jesus this week?

Group Conversation

  1. Why do you think Peter and John noticed the lame man when so many others passed by?
  2. Which “lens” do you think is most common in today’s culture? Why?
  3. How does being filled with the Holy Spirit change the way we approach everyday challenges?
  4. Why is personal testimony such a powerful witness to unbelievers?
  5. What does it practically look like to pray for boldness instead of simply praying for easier circumstances?

Application

This week, intentionally shift your lens by setting aside at least 20 minutes each day to spend time with Jesus through His Word, allowing Him to renew your perspective. Then choose one circumstance you’re facing and intentionally begin viewing it through a power lens—asking God what He can do instead of focusing only on what you currently see. As you trust the Holy Spirit, expect Him to work through your life with boldness, hope, and supernatural power.
